In September 2025, I will welcome my second baby girl—a milestone that brings both excitement and deep reflection. The past 18 months of motherhood have been a journey filled with joy, struggles, and moments of guilt as I balanced my career and being a new mom.
As a financial planner, I spend my days helping people create structure and long-term plans for their futures. But if motherhood has taught me anything, it’s that life doesn’t always go as planned—and that’s okay.
Here are some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from my transition into working motherhood:
1. Life Doesn’t Always Go as Planned—And That’s Okay
I build financial roadmaps for a living, helping families prepare for the future. But no matter how much planning we do, life has a way of unfolding in unexpected ways. Before becoming a mom, I thrived on organization and predictability.
Motherhood, however, has shown me that flexibility is just as valuable as preparation. The detours in life often lead us to exactly where we’re meant to be. The moments I worried about “falling behind” in one area or another have always worked out in ways I never could have anticipated.
2. Patience is a Skill Worth Learning
I used to pride myself on efficiency—checking off to-do lists, meeting deadlines, and ensuring everything was done now. Then, I had a baby. Suddenly, things didn’t always happen on schedule. Tasks took longer. Plans changed at the last minute. And I had to learn to be okay with that.Patience doesn’t mean slowing down your ambition—it means accepting that some things take time. And in the moments when I have slowed down, I’ve realized how much I was missing before.
3. Boundaries Matter More Than Ever
I’ve always struggled with saying no. I enjoy being there for my clients, my team, and the people around me. But motherhood forced me to redefine my priorities.
Now, I’ve learned that setting boundaries isn’t about saying no to others—it’s about saying yes to what truly matters. Whether it’s stepping away from work emails in the evening to spend time with my daughter or protecting time for myself, I’ve realized that boundaries allow me to show up better—both at home and in my career.
Balancing Career and Motherhood: Finding My Purpose
Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my career just as much as ever—perhaps even more now—because I understand firsthand how important financial security and planning are for families.
I want to continue building a future where my daughters have options, and I want to help other families do the same. That mission has only grown stronger since becoming a mom.
I’m also incredibly grateful for the supportive team, colleagues, and company that allow me to grow my career while growing my family. Not every working parent has that support, and I recognize how fortunate I am to be in a space where women are encouraged to thrive—both professionally and personally.
As I prepare to welcome another little one into our world, I know there will be even more lessons ahead. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that we don’t have to have everything figured out. We just need to keep moving forward, embracing the chaos, and trusting that we’re exactly where we’re meant to be.
